Gunmen have killed a police sergeant and five other people at a drinking joint in Okpoga town of Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue State.
The gunmen are suspected to be natives of one of the two communities in the area who had recently engaged themselves in communal rivalry.
It was learnt that the Olô community in Edumoga district of the same Okpokwu LGA had been in cold war with their neighbouring community of Okpoga for the past five years.
Police Spokesman, DSP. Moses Joel Yamu, confirmed the killings.
Yamu said, “Sporadic gunshots was heard at a beer parlour around Okpoga roundabout yesterday (Saturday) at about 9pm, our men swiftly mobilised to the scene and engaged the hoodlums in a gun duel which forced them to flee.
“However, six persons including a Police Sergeant who was on mufti were killed in the beer parlour before the police arrived the scene. Preliminary investigation revealed that the yet to be identified armed men were from Ollo community, led by one Mathew,” he said.
The police spokesman added that the Commissioner of Police, Ene Okon, has ordered the Area Commander to relocate to that area as teams of Operation Zenda, PMF and CTU have been drafted to the area to ensure that the culprits are identified and arrested.
