A police sergeant has been allegedly shot and killed by gunmen at a checkpoint in Taraba State, and his rifle stolen.

Daily Trust gathered that the police sergeant was on duty at a checkpoint in Tella town, in Gassol Local Government Area, when gunmen attacked him at about 10pm on Monday.

A source told Daily Trust that the policeman was hit in the head and died instantly.

The other police officers at the checkpoint reportedly fled.

It was gathered that the gunmen took the victim’s rifle before escaping from the scene.

The Police Public Relations Officer for the Taraba State Police Command, ASP Leshen James, did not answer calls or reply to text messages regarding the incident.
