Gunmen have reportedly killed a member of the vigilante identified as Dangana Ayuba while injuring two herders at a Fulani settlement in Gasakpa community in Abaji Area Council of the FCT.

A member of the vigilante, who was part of the operation, simply identified as Yahaya, said the incident occurred on Saturday at about 11:15pm when the gunmen, in their numbers wielding weapons, attempted to rustle cows at a Fulani settlement in the area.

He said the herders alerted vigilantes at the Gasakpa community, who mobilised to engage the gunmen in a fierce gun battle.

He said the vigilantes were eight in number.

He said during the exchange of fire, one of the vigilantes was hit in the chest, while two of the herders sustained bullet injuries during the ensuing shootout.

He said, “The gunmen almost succeeded in moving away with the cows, but with the swift intervention of the vigilantes, who mobilised to engage them, they abandoned the cows and escaped but unfortunately, one of the vigilantes lost his life,” he said.

The vigilante member said the deceased died while being rushed to the hospital at neighbouring Gawu Babangida, adding that two of the injured herders were receiving treatment at the hospital.

He said the remains of the vigilante had been buried in the community.

Several calls and text messages put across to the spokeswoman of the FCT police command, Josephine Adeh, were not answered at the time of filling the report.
