Four police officers attached to the Sabongida- Ora Division in Owan West Local Government of Edo State have been reportedly killed by gunmen while on patrol.
It was gathered that the incident happened early hour of Sunday during stop and search by the police.
It was further gathered the Police officers were on security patrol to the area where normally mount check point when gunmen opened fire on them.
It was learnt that the gunmen who laid ambush for them opened fire on them as they were about to alight from their vehicle, killing four of them.
Daily Trust learnt the assailants set ablaze their patrol vehicle with the bodies of victims inside, after allegedly taken away their weapons.
The Chairman of Owan West Local Government Area, Frank Ilaboya, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview with our reporter
"From information available to me,the policemen were about to alight from their vehicle when the assailants opened fire on them.
"They were said to have set their vehicle ablaze and took away their guns. I cannot confirm whether they were armed robbers or not," he said.
He said the community is in total confusion, adding that he has convened an emergency security meeting to look at the issue as there is no eye witness that can give an account of what really happened.
When contacted, the Edo State Police Command public relation officer, DSP Chidi Nwanbuzo, said, "I just received the information from the media. We are yet to be briefed"
