President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday submitted the names of former National Security Adviser retired General Mohammed Aliyu Gusau, Ambassador Aminu Wali and nine others to the Senate for confirmation as ministers.
Although the nominations were without portfolios, sources in the National Assembly said Gusau may be appointed defence minister, a position that has been vacant for two years after the removal of Alhaji Bello Halliru Mohammed.
Also nominated are former Adamawa State governor Boni Haruna, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro from Lagos and Hajiya Jamila Salik from Kano State.
The nominations were contained in Jonathan’s letter to the Senate, presented by Senate President David Mark.
Also on the list are Mrs. Lawrencia Laraba Malam, former chairperson of Zagon-Kataf LGA of Kaduna State; Mrs. Akon Etim Eyakenyi Akon from Akwa Ibom; former House of Representatives leader Mohammed Wakil from Borno; and Abduljelili Oyewale Adesiyan from Osun State.
Other nominees are Mrs. Asabe Ahmed, who is Special Adviser to Niger Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu on Investment and Housing; Dr. Khaliru Alhassan, the Director of Medical Services and Public Health at the Sokoto Health Ministry; and Dr. T. W. Danagogo from Rivers State.
The nominations are subject to confirmation by the Senate.
Senate Leader Victor Ndoma-Egba (PDP, Cross River) told Daily Trust yesterday that the Senate may decide today to begin screening of the nominees tomorrow.
The nominations came four months after President Jonathan sacked nine ministers.
He had also fired one minister in August.
