Gusau College shuts down over pay cuts

The Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) Federal College of Education (Technical) Gusau has embarked on an indefinite strike action over salary deductions.
The chairman of the union,Aliyu
Sarkin Rafi, said the strike was due to the management’s failure to resolve some issues which included stoppage of illegal deductions of staff salaries, immediate payment of the two months arrears of the deducted salaries, implementation of 2015 promotion and pay arrears with immediate effect.
He said others were unconditional re-engagement of the staff suspended over excursion trip, suspension of every committee and its report that was set up to tarnish the good image of the members and non-participation in degree programmes until concrete agreement is reached and implemented.
In his reaction to the development, the Registrar of the institution, Mallam Aliyu Umar, said the issue of deductions of salaries was due to shortfall in monetary allocation from the Federal Ministry of Finance and that two months arrears had already been paid to the staff.
“On the issue of suspended staff, the college had taken disciplinary measures against them after it was discovered that they erred in that excursion trip.  Our students were waylaid by armed robbers in Niger State and their belongings carted away.
