Residents of Gwagwa community in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) have decried neglect from government.

Speaking with our reporters in his palace recently, the Chief of Gwagwa, Alhaji Shuaibu Muhammad, said the community has been denied social amenities by both the FCT Administration and AMAC.

The chief complained that the major problem they are facing is the bad road that has been abandoned after several attempts have been made to repair it.

The chief who spoke through his Secretary, Ismaila Bala Baba, lamented the dreadful condition of the road leading to the community.

He said, “Each time repairs are being made on the road, the repairs start from Idu and stops at Akaraka. Or at other times, repairs start from Dei-Dei express and stop at China Company in Gwaagwa but they never get to the main road here, at Gwagwa even after various appeals,” he said.

He however said, “We had meetings with various companies alongside other chiefs, to discuss the repair of the road, and the companies helped to repair the road. Although it was done up to standard, it made the road a little bit accessible. But after about two months, the road got spoilt again and since then, it has been the youths of the community that have been putting stones and bricks inside the potholes in the road to make it passable.”

The chief said  the new government has also made promises to repair the road but only after the rains stopped, saying the community was waiting anxiously for the time work will start on the road.

The chief also bemoaned the fact that the bad road has caused many fatal accidents that most times led to death.

A resident of the area, Mr. Chinedu Nwacheta, who also spoke on the state of the road said: “My sister who was supposed to get married this December had an accident on this road. She was trying to cross the road and a car that was trying to avoid the potholes swerved and hit her. Now, my sister is in the hospital receiving treatment, her two legs are broken and she is sitting in a wheelchair as we speak.”

They also complained about lack of other social amenities like power supply. They said power supply in the area is epileptic.

“Also in the aspect of water, we do not have good or clean water and the financially buoyant ones most times dig boreholes that are meant for private use, but even at that, the water still gets dried up especially during the dry season,” the secretary to the chief added.
