The Association of Hajj and Umrah Operators of Nigeria (AHUON) has called on the National Assembly to amend the law that established the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), urging a focus on its regulatory role within the hajj industry.

During a zonal conference in Abuja, Barr Mohammed Babangida Umar stressed the need to overhaul and amend Section 3 of the NAHCON Act 2006 to allow tour operators like AHUON to be represented on NAHCON’s Board of Trustees.

He emphasised that NAHCON, as empowered by Sections 16 and 23 of the act, should strictly adhere to its regulatory responsibilities, including the control of hajj regulations, licensing, supervision and oversight functions.

Usman A. Ambursa, AHUON’s vice president for the Abuja zone, noted that the conference offered a valuable opportunity for stakeholders to exchange ideas and shape the future of the industry.

AHUON’s President, Abdullateef Yusuf Ekundayo, underscored the lapses observed during the previous hajj exercise, noting that the primary goal of the conference was to promote standard practices among private hajj and umrah operators.

He stressed the importance of maintaining pilgrims’ confidence.

Ekundayo also pointed out that successful operations for tour operators depended on several critical factors, including careful planning and organisation, effective directing and coordinating, and proper budgeting.
