Harmattan: NERC reaches out to 38,000 Almajiri Pupils in Yobe

At least 38,000 Almajiri children from Tsangaya and Almajiris schools have received humanitarian items across the 17 LGAs of Yobe State.

The humanitarian support was facilitated by the North East Development Commission (NEDC) in collaboration with the Yobe State Government.

Distributing the items to the beneficiaries, at Tsangayar Malam Rabiu Mai Bataliya in Gujba LGA, the NEDC’s Managing Director Mr. Mohammed Goni Alkali, said the gesture was part of the commitments of the commission to support the vulnerable population.

Represented by the NEDC’s Coordinator in Yobe State Professor Ali Ibrahim Abbas, said the distribution of the items will reduce the effect of harmattan in Almajiris schools across the state.

According to him, the commission is committed to address one of the most pressing educational challenges confronting the region especially the issue of out of school children.

The NEDC’s Coordinator said the commission has constructed 5 solar boreholes to provide the accessible drinking water in the Tsangaya schools.

He added that the NEDC is planning to install solar street lights, boreholes, teaching and learning materials in the Almajiris schools.

Receiving the items, Malam Rabiu Mai Bataliya, appreciates the commission and the Yobe State government for supporting the schools.

He said the solar borehole constructed by the NEDC has reduced the problem of water scarcity in Tsangaya schools.
