Hausa Gets Interim Accreditation As NUC Okays 37 Courses For Unilorin

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted interim accreditation status to the Hausa language programme at the University of Ilorin.

This followed the NUC’s outcome of its October/November 2024 accreditation exercise.

Also, the Igbo programme from the same Faculty of Arts received full accreditation.

The outcome was confirmed in a letter dated April 30, 2025, and addressed to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Wahab Egbewole (SAN).

The letter was signed on behalf of the NUC Executive Secretary, Professor Abdullahi Ribadu, by the Acting Director of Accreditation, Engr. Abraham Chundusu.

The two language programmes were part of the 37 academic courses presented by the university for evaluation.

According to the NUC, 36 received full accreditation, with Hausa being the only programme granted interim status.

With this development, the NUC has okayed the Hausa language programme for continued operation as the university concludes the requirements before the next round of evaluation.

The institution’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, announced the development in a statement on Tuesday describing it as “100% accreditation success.”

With the Hausa programme granted interim status, the university administration hailed the overall outcome as a testament to its commitment to academic quality and institutional excellence.

Reacting to the news, the Vice Chancellor said the university community received the results with joy and a deep sense of fulfilment. “We are happy to be so recognised and indeed elated,” he stated.

He added that the achievement reflects years of strategic investment in both human capital and infrastructure, pledging that the institution would not relent in its pursuit of even higher standards.

The Vice Chancellor also extended appreciation to the Provost, Deans, Heads of Departments, and faculty members whose dedication made the accomplishment possible.

“This milestone is not just an end, but a call to deepen our efforts in delivering quality education. We will continue to raise the bar,” Egbewole said.

Among the accredited programmes were those from the Faculties of Education, Engineering and Technology, Management Sciences, Basic Medical Sciences, Communication and Information Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, and Arts among others.

Daily Trust reports that the NUC accreditation process is a statutory quality assurance mechanism that evaluates Nigerian university programmes based on established benchmarks, including academic content, staffing, infrastructure, and overall programme viability.
