At a graduation ceremony organised at the completion of a two-day Champion Series II workshop, organised by Champions for Change (C4C) in Lagos, the health agents were admonished to contribute their quota to reducing high incidences of child and maternal mortality rates in Nigeria.
Speaking at the event, the Country Representative of C4C, Theresa Kaka Effa, said it is unfortunate that in Nigeria, one in 13 women dies in pregnancy or childbirth, and 12 percent of children die before reaching the age of five.
She said it was in a bid to address the situation that C4C is investing in Nigerian advocates who are leading the fight for healthy mothers, children, and families.
“C4C provides Nigerian leaders with intensive leadership development and executive coaching, strengthens partner organisations through advocacy funding and technical assistance, and supports Nigerian networks to collaboratively advance the RMNCH agenda.
“Recognising that pregnancy and child birth related complication is the leading cause of death for adolescent girls globally, C4C also supports innovative strategies for engaging young women in RMNCH advocacy. This engagement will include a national convening of RMNCH leaders at a Summit in 2016,” Effa said.
The country representative further noted that the 24 participants in the Series II workshop had been tutored to focus on advocacy planning and budgetary advocacy.
She said this is because budgetary advocacy is critical to the implementation of the National Health Act to ensure access to sustainable and high quality maternal, newborn and child health care services.
