Torrential rainfall has wreaked havoc in Darwat-Jol community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, destroying over 20 houses and displacing several families.

The downpour, which occurred on Saturday afternoon, triggered massive flooding that swept through the area, leaving residents counting their losses.

Some farmlands were also destroyed by the rains.

A resident of Riyom, Mr Damba Dang, who confirmed the incident, described the rainfall as one of the heaviest in recent times, saying it overwhelmed the community’s inadequate drainage system.

“Many houses, especially those built with mud and thatch, collapsed under the weight of the water. We lost food items, clothing, and other household goods. It was a terrible sight,” he said.

Eyewitnesses said the affected homes included residential buildings and nearby farmlands, worsening the plight of the agrarian community already grappling with economic hardship.

He said some residents have appealed to the Plateau State Government, relevant agencies, and humanitarian organisations for urgent provision of relief materials.
