Soldiers were drafted to the prison while the remaining four inmates who did not escape were transported to the police headquarters in Kaduna for interrogation.
Narrating the incident, a resident of Kachia, Sherif Kassim said the inmates were able to escape after digging a deep tunnel.
“The inmates were dangerous criminals who were serving various jail terms. They dug a tunnel in their room and escaped to the premises where they attacked one of the warders on duty. They hit him with sharp objects and left him unconscious before they escaped,” Kassim said.
He said the police and soldiers later launched a massive manhunt in the area, but none of the escapees was recaptured.
In a related development, unknown gunmen, Friday morning killed at least five people in Ambe village, Sanga Local Government Area. This was the second attack in the area this week. A total of 10 people were earlier killed in the attack.
Additional soldiers were seen patrolling the neighbouring villages yesterday. The police public relations officer, Kaduna State command, Aminu Lawan, could not be reached for comments on both cases before filing this report.
