The Commissioner of Police in Niger State, Shawulu E. Danmaman, has attributed the rising crime rate, particularly among teenagers, to the high number of out-of-school children in the state.
He disclosed that between January and December 2024, 713 crime suspects, including teenagers, were arrested for various crimes such as homicide, armed robbery, kidnapping, and car theft.
Briefing journalists on the activities of the command in 2024 in Minna, the state capital, Danmaman said the police have successfully rescued 37 kidnapped victims and seized a variety of firearms and ammunition.
He also gave an update on the death of Hadiza Umaru, who was allegedly murdered by her younger brother, Habibu Umaru, in collaboration with an herbalist.
He said the victim was poisoned under the guise of treatment for “evil spirits,” and her body was buried in a shallow grave.
Further investigations led to the discovery of additional graves in the same area, he added.
