The Kwara State Government has declared Tuesday a public holiday to mark the commencement of the Islamic New Year, 1448 AH.
The announcement aligns with the sighting of the new moon, making Tuesday the first day of Muharram, the opening month of the Islamic lunar calendar.
In a statement issued on Monday by Bolanle Olukoju, Commissioner for Communications, the government called on Muslims and residents across the state to reflect on the deeper meaning of Hijrah.
It urged lessons of tolerance, unity and shared humanity.

According to her, the migration of the Holy Prophet Muhammad symbolises resilience, peaceful coexistence, and respect for individual aspirations so long as they do not infringe on the rights of others.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq prayed for divine blessings on families across the state and called for renewed peace and stability.
“He also urged residents to remain committed to doing what is right and fostering harmony in their communities as the new Islamic year begins,” she added.
She noted that the occasion should serve as a moment of spiritual renewal and collective commitment to peacebuilding across the state.
