The Kano State Hisbah board has repatriated 60,822 beggars to their respective states of origin between 2014 and 2015, the Director General of the board, Alhaji Abba Sufi has said.
Sufi also said out of the figures 270 beggars were foreigners and had been taken back to their country of origin Niger republic.
He said the repatriated beggars were arrested at different locations within Kano metropolis within the period under review.
Sufi said that some of them were handed over to police while others were taken to court for proper prosecution, adding that 22 were handed over to police,  82 were taken to court while 86 others were found to be suffering from mental disorder.
The chairman said the affected beggars comprised of 20, 346 and 10,658 male, female and young beggars respectively.
He further explained that out of the number, 12,310 were from Kano state while 16,988 were from Katsina, Kaduna, Jigawa and Niger states.
It would be recalled that Kano state government had in December last year banned street begging in the state.
Kano Chronicle recalled that the State House of Assembly had at that time enacted a law banning street begging in the state.
