The Kano state Hisbah Board has confiscated over 300,000 cartons of beer in Kano city over the past few weeks, Kano Chronicle reports.
The beer which was mostly seized from Sabon Gari area of the city was taken to the Hisbah headquarters in Sharada quarters.
An official who was involved in the seizure of the alcoholic substances said apart from the initial 300,000 cartons, three more trucks loaded with 1,400 cartons of beer each were also intercepted.
He said while one of the three trucks was arrested close to Tamburawa village in the outskirts of the city, another truck was stopped at Sabon Gari, adding that it took the efforts of other security agents to tow the truck.
“In the course of arresting the beer truck in Sabon Gari area, some youths confronted our men and tried to prevent them from taking away the truck and gave the driver an opportunity to escape. They even injured one of our officers, but we sought the assistance of some soldiers and police to calm the situation,” the official said. He added that the said truck was later towed away by a Karota crane, saying that the culprits who tried to cause trouble had since been arrested and taken to the court.
Confirming the report, the Deputy Commander-General of the Board in charge of legal services Malam Nabahani Usman said Hisbah had embarked on massive operations to get rid of all alcoholic substances from the state.
“We’ve been able to arrest several trucks loaded with over 300,000 cartons of beer in accordance with the relevant laws prohibiting all dealings with alcoholic substances in the state,” he said.
