About 13, 000 children were killed out of the 21, 000 children newly infected with HIV in 2020.

Director-General, National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), Aliyu Gumel Gambo, said this in Abuja Thursday during the national pediatric HIV – TB consultative meeting.

He said as of 2020, only 36 percent of the 150, 000 children living in Nigeria had access to life-saving antiretroviral therapy.

He said the national consultation was aimed at identifying specific programmatic and policy barriers militating against TB cases finding in children and access to life-saving therapy and services in Nigeria.

Eduardo Celades, Chief of Health, UNICEF, said Nigeria was number one in AIDS deaths among children with TB as a significant contributor.

He said the UNICEF and the UN Joint Team were concerned about situation of children in the context of HIV and TB in Nigeria.
