The advice from the President, according to the reports is – RESIGN YOUR APPOINTMENT OR ELSE……
In the case of the Governor of the Central Bank, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the grouse is that the letter was believed to have been leaked to the President’s current top enemy former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who had written President Goodluck Jonathan making allusions to information revealed in the letter also written also to the President by Sanusi, to the effect that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, a Federal Government had fraudulently diverted the mind-boggling sum of $12 billion being crude oil sales proceeds between January 2012 and July 2013. Then according to the CBN governor, 76% of all crude oil sales for the period had not been accounted for and only 24 percent of the proceeds appeared in the records of the federation account, kept by the Central Bank. Put simply, N8 trillion had been stolen.
The case of frontline politician National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Bamanga Mohammed Tukur is also a well followed one. Him and President Goodluck Jonathan have starred in the longest running “epic” in the country and you could title it “Nullify Amaechi” which is the closest you can get to the 70s cartoon show “Catch the Pigeon”. Just as every effort to catch the pigeon in the cartoon ends in a disaster, every effort to nullify Amaechi has produced a far worse outcome. yet the struggle continues. What began over a year ago as a ploy to take control of the Nigerian Governor’s Forum has acted as a nuclear bomb whose explosion has scattered the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, touted as the biggest and the most powerful political party in Africa. Sadly it produced the weakest President on the continent whose party collapsed on his laps, losing 5 prominent Governors, and compromising many more in “belong to rule” silence, and in addition to losing majority hold of the National Assembly.
President Goodluck Jonathan returned to the country to face revolts in the Party. Former President Obasanjo announced a withdrawal from the party which was merely just this short of resignation, while members of the National Working Committee of the Party hitherto loyal to Tukur suddenly announced a vote of no confidence, warning the President that Tukur was the problem and had to be sacked.
In Nigeria, you do not hear the President at first. You read his body language especially if he suddenly takes ill amidst a crisis. Then you read his lip and thereafter, hear him. In between, the different parties on an issue take to the media using radio, television, newspapers, town criers and rallies (with or without Police Commissioner Mbu’s permission). The thinking of the President is given reliable indicators by statements the central figures in a crisis make to the media.
Central Bank Governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has told the nation, the President has no right to sack him. As if reading the legal provisions to the President, Sanusi is reported to have said that he would resist any attempt to force him out of office before June 2 when his tenure would have expired. Said Tukur, “I am an elected national chairman; I have my certificate of return and I cannot resign. A convention brought me; so it has to take the convention that brought me for me to resign. So, not even the President can ask me to resign”. It would be intriguing if President Jonathan accedes to the demands of the rebellious members if the National Working Committee of the PDP to ask Tukur to go – given that this would add to the swell of the “departees”. For one may ask, what then was gained from holding on to Tukur till the Party lost its powerful Governors and legislators?
And Sanusi. We recall former Head of Service Orosanye on live network tv asking Nuhu Ribadu SO WHAT if Mr. President needed a report submitted within dateline, right in the presence of a bewildered President and Cabinet. So far nothing has happened on that either to Ribadu, Orosanye, or the NNPC and now, the Central Bank Governor has pointed to the failure of the Government Oil Company (NNPC), to account for the $12 billion dollars which it has now been revealed was the amount committed to the paid controversial petroleum subsidy payments. Sanusi had regretted before the Senate that his communication to the president was leaked to the public, and that he made a mistake at his computation. Many say that at this point, a strong President would have announced the sack of Sanusi to rationalise the act later, after all this is a political regime. But to leave it until Sanusi himself revealed how he can be sacked, just did not portray a presidential President.
Sanusi has insisted that his letter was meant for the president to launch an investigation into the issue, which would have revealed as we now know, that the money is indeed missing paid not from the legislated budget but from earnings, and to subsidy merchants. The nation has been looted, and the citizens do not understand the language. It takes subhuman logic to explain goings on in Nigeria.
Thus, and I hope they read this before the demanded resignation, as long as the powerful ladies of Okonjo-Iweala, Stella Oduah, and Diezani Alison-Madueke are at the stern, Tukur and Sanusi should better hold until relieved.
