In a momentous engagement on the global stage, Hon. Amos Gwamna Magaji, Chairman of the House Committee on Healthcare Services at Nigeria’s National Assembly, addressed the distinguished audience at the World Health Assembly held at the United Nations Office in Geneva, Switzerland.

The annual event convenes health ministers, multilateral organizations, and global health leaders from around the world to shape international health policy and foster collaboration.

In his remarks, Hon. Magaji underscored the urgent need for stronger, more resilient health systems, particularly in developing nations like Nigeria. He emphasized the importance of inclusive healthcare financing, strategic investments in primary healthcare, and the integration of technology in service delivery. Drawing on Nigeria’s own healthcare challenges and successes, he shared practical insights on how to accelerate progress toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

“Global health challenges require global solidarity,” Hon. Magaji stated. “But more importantly, they require home-grown solutions rooted in local context, and backed by international cooperation.

The Nigerian delegation was one of the most active at the event, with Hon. Magaji joining a high-powered team led by Coordinating Minister of Health, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, and Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako. Also present were the Executive Secretary of the Global Fund, the Director General of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Kazim, Director of Health Planning, Research and Statistics, the Director Generals of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), as well as other top-level representatives from the Federal Ministry of Health.

Hon. Magaji’s speech drew attention to Nigeria’s legislative efforts to improve healthcare outcomes. He highlighted the National Assembly’s ongoing reforms focused on health insurance coverage, public-private partnerships, and accountability mechanisms to ensure transparency and efficiency in health spending.

Beyond the plenary sessions, Hon. Magaji held strategic side meetings with international partners and stakeholders, advocating for increased support to Nigeria’s health sector and reinforcing Nigeria’s role in global health diplomacy.

The Assembly provided a powerful platform for policy advocacy and knowledge exchange. According to Hon. Magaji, one of the most valuable outcomes was the reaffirmation of shared commitments to equity, access, and sustainability in health—principles that remain at the heart of Nigeria’s health sector reform.

“We return from Geneva not just inspired, but also better informed and better connected—to continue the hard work of transforming our healthcare system and safeguarding the wellbeing of every Nigerian,” he concluded.

As Nigeria strengthens its role in global health policy dialogue, the leadership and representation by lawmakers like Hon. Magaji continue to ensure that national interests are aligned with global priorities—ensuring that health for all is not just a goal, but a lived reality.
