Armed men suspected to be kidnappers have reportedly abducted six women from Ugbamaka while returning home from Ejule market in Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
Locals said the women were abducted at gunpoint around 5:30 pm along the Ejule -Agojeju -Ugbamaka Road when their vehicle ran into the barricade mounted by the hoodlums.
A witness said their abductors whisked the women to their hideout at a forest in the area.
The sister of one of the victims, Jumai David said, “Six of our women from Ugbamaka, who went to Ejule market on Saturday have been kidnapped by hooligans, suspected to be kidnappers on their way home.
“The victims include my auntie and wife of Ainoko; Abaro; Ojoma; wife of Sam Ochika and wife of Diyee.
“Their abductor left the driver of the vehicle behind but collected his phone and those of the six women. We have not contacted them since the incident. No contact has been made to any of us either.”
She said the soldiers, who were keeping vigil in the area, were alerted shortly after the incident and have been on the trail of the hoodlums.
“Unfortunately, the more the soldiers get closer, the more their abductors notice it and increase their speed forward,” said another relative of one of the victims.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP William Aya, confirmed the incident, saying the market women were returning to their villages when the armed men picked them.
He said, “Efforts are being intensified to bring the women back home safe.’’
