No fewer than three officials of Edo State Public Works volunteers (PUWOV) were reportedly attacked and injured by suspected hoodlums in Benin.

It was gathered that the incident happened at tomato market at Aduwawa, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State when officials assigned to ensure sanity in the area attempted to arrest a commercial bus driver who was alleged to have picked passengers at unauthorized location. 

It was gathered that the driver of the vehicle, who resisted arrest, raised alarm of being extorted by PUWOV without committing an offence.

It was further gathered that the mob overpowered PUWOV members and descend on them with cutlasses and bottles, injuring them on the head and leg.

The hoodlums were alleged to have after attacking the workers vandalised three vehicles before the intervention of the police.

It was also gathered that the injured officials were taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment. 

Speaking to journalists, State Chairman of Public Works Guards, Muktar Osagie, condemned the attacks, saying the injured had been taken to hospital for treatment.

He attributed the incessant attack on its members to the proscription of illegal revenue collections and illegal ticketing which he said had restored sanity to the State.

When contacted, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Johnson Babatunde Johnson, confirmed the arrest of some suspects in connection with the alleged attack.
