A large number of hoodlums on Wednesday afternoon unleashed mayhem on commuters and business owners at Gandun Albasa Quarters of Kano metropolis wielding weapons and snatching phones, money and other property.

A witness, Malam Kabiru Hussaini, told City & Crime that the hoodlums, mostly youths, blocked Magaji Danbatta Road and snatched people’s phones.

He said, “They were carrying weapons and a bag. They would just come to you and ask you to deposit your phone in the bag, if you comply they would just pass you and if you don’t they would snatch.”

Another witness, Saadu Dauda, said, “I was in my shop when I saw people running, saying it was thugs that were collecting their phones. That’s when I immediately closed my shop and ran.”

Abba Lawan, a carpenter in the area, said that besides collecting people’s money and phones, the thugs broke glasses and took peoples belongings.

One Zakiru Ibrahim who sells soft drinks lamented that they took all his wares, including petrol he was selling.

Another victim, Musa Ibrahim, said, “My money amounting to N50,000 inside my bag was stolen; they chased my brother and collected it. If not because we ran, they would have injured us.”

However, the thugs were said to have been chased away by carpenters who brought out woods and ran after them.

When contacted, the spokesman of the police in the state, SP Haruna Kiyawa, confirmed the incident, saying policemen were quickly mobilised to the area and an unspecified number of suspects were arrested.
