Hoodlums suspected to be gunmen have stormed Ukpor, headquarters of Nnewi South council area of Anambra state, setting the secretariat on fire.

A resident of the area, who gave her name as Chigozie Nwajiaku, said the attack occurred on Wednesday morning, adding that it might be the handiwork of the unknown gunmen troubling communities within the southeast region.
Efforts made to contact the Chairman of Nnewi South Local Government Area for his reaction was not successful as of the time of filing this report.
But the traditional ruler of Ukpor community, Igwe Nwosu Onyimadu, confirmed the incident. He however said he had no details of the incident and could not comment further.
The President General of Ukpor Improvement Union (UIU), Mr. Emmanuel Nwachukwu, also confirmed the incident to our reporter, but refused to give details of casualties.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Anambra State Command, Tochukwu Ikenga, said the arson was not perpetrated by unknown gunmen.
He said, “Report we received is that there was a case of arson. Unknown fellows set some buildings ablaze at the secretariat complex. Already, men of the fire service have mobilized to the area to put out the fire.
“Police operatives have also been deployed to cordon off the secretariat. People should go about their normal businesses as normalcy has returned to the area.”
He however could not confirm any death in connection with the incident.
