The Lagos State Police Command has arrested two Uber cab drivers described as specialists in robbing women of their valuables at gun point.
The drivers – Fosta Rufus, 30, and Franklin Jogbodo – were alleged to be operating their crimes at night around the Lekki, Ajah and Victoria Island areas of Lagos State, robbing mostly women who walk in the night.
This latest arrest would be the second of such arrest of Uber drivers in Lagos in recent times.
Rufus and Jogbodo were accused of robbing their victims of valuables such as jewelries, expensive phones and cash.
The Lagos State Police Commissioner, Edgal Imohimi, who paraded the suspects on Monday at the Command Headquarters, Ikeja, said that the suspects at times would follow their victims to an ATM from where they would force them to withdraw cash at gun point.
Imohimi said that the suspects had admitted participating in three different armed robbery operations in the past.
“On one occasion the suspects collected the sum of N86,000 from their victim using her Access Bank ATM card. They have both confessed to the crime,” he said.
He added that a KIA Rio with registration number BDG 376 EP the suspects used in perpetrating their crimes was recovered from them.
Also recovered were a Samsung Galaxy 7 Edge Plus and an IPhone 6 Plus the suspects were alleged to have collected from two of their victims identified as Nancy Nzuegbo and Eze Chinonso.
The Lagos State police boss seized the occasion to say he has directed all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to maintain police visibility in major roads and neighbourhood across the metropolis.
“I have also directed them to carry out constant raids of back spots. We hope to sustain the current low crime rate in the state,” he promised.
But in his statement, Jogbodo denied robbing anybody, saying it was his friend, Rufus, whom he had introduced into the Uber business, who dragged him into the problem.
“I met Fosta while working with UBA as a driver. I met him again sometime this year. I helped him to register as an Uber driver. It was him who collected the phones that were found on us from some ladies,” he said.
