Lami Ashani said some people who have formed the habit of eating dead chickens targeted her poultry where they burn cashew nuts in a bush near the poultry farm so that her chickens inhale the smoke from the burning nuts and die.
“We did not notice it on time. On four or five occasions, my poultry farm attendants will call and tell me that some chickens have died mysteriously while some were looking very weak. I will always ask the veterinarian to check and nothing will be discovered. Any time we throw away the dead chickens, some youth from the nearby village that have farms near my poultry will come and take them away.
“It was the Fulani woman that my farm attendants were buying cow milk from that told us that the cashew nuts some boys were burning near my farm was responsible for the death of my chickens. We took two chickens to a bush and burnt some cashew nuts near them and they died instantly. Since then I complained to the village head who warned the youth to stop the habit.
“I also warned my farm attendants to stop giving anybody any dead chicken because that is what is encouraging them to kill my chicken. If any chicken should die in my farm now I will rather bury it. I lost about 170 chicken in the process but since we discovered it about three weeks ago, we have not had any such incident again,” she said.
Madam Ashani advised poultry farmers to alert their poultry workers to pay attention to any form of smoke they see around their farms and to stop the habit of giving anybody dead chicken as that encourages the habit of using tricks to attack the farms. “Bury all your dead chickens so that those targeting will have nothing to gain from,” she advised.
