Four-year-old David Jacob was killed while two of his classmates were injured when the wall of their classroom collapsed on them last week.
The mud wall of Nursery 1 class of Monsil International School Kado, Abuja, collapsed on the pupils during breakfast. David sustained injuries in the head and was taken to a public hospital in Gwarinpa where he died.
Director of the FCT Department of Quality and Advanced Education Secretariat, Mr. Ayuba Didam, said the school, owned by one Mr Ogbonna Ubah, had since been closed.
He said the school was neither registered nor accredited and has been closed several times by authorities but was reopened by the proprietor illegally.
David’s father, Mr. Jacob Weishe, an auxiliary staff of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), said “I was on duty at Area 11, Abuja, when I was told on telephone that a building collapsed on my son David. I rushed to Gwarinpa General Hospital where the boy was taken to. After a while, the doctor told us that the boy was dead. We took the corpse and buried it immediately.”
Weishe, an indigene of Kaduna State, said he would not take further action on the matter and has left everything to God Almighty.
“I love my son. He was very intelligent. I’ve left everything to God. I forgive the school proprietor,”he said.
He said that he decided to enrol his son in the school “it is very close to our house. I pay N4, 800 per term. The school fees are cheap and the school is the best in our area.”
David’s mother, Salamatu Jacob, said “From all indication, the building collapsed directly on his head. He was my first son. They were two. His brother is still alive. David was lovely and very intelligent,”he said.
Efforts to speak to Mr. Ubah were not successful as he was said to be under detention at Life Camp police station. When Daily Trust reporter visited the station he was not allowed to speak to the suspect.
Meanwhile, the Chairman Parents Teachers Association of the school, Pastor Emmanuel Audu, confirmed the incident on telephone.
Audu, a Senior Pastor with the Jesus Christ Practical Ministry, Kado, said the school had 200 pupils, adding that he was not aware that the school was operating illegally. He however said that  the school was the best in the area.
Two other pupils – Gambo Isa and Treasure Felix – survived the incident, a teacher  in the school said.
