The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, Abuja, Prof. Saad Ahmed, has said that the corpse of the hospital’s nurse, Chinemerem Chuwumeziem, who was murdered was found around Bolingo Hotel Junction at the Central Business District, Abuja, by the police.

He said the corpse was found with her bag and bible but without her mobile phone.

The Medical Director told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday that Chuwumeziem, who joined the FMC in 2025, quickly distinguished herself through dedication and compassion, earning admiration from colleagues and patients.

He said she was named “Best Nurse of the Year 2025” at the hospital’s award programme.

He explained that Chuwumeziem finished her afternoon shift on that Saturday and left the hospital at 6:13pm as captured on CCTV.

He said concern was raised early on Sunday when her family reported she had not returned home.

He said, “The hospital immediately mobilised staff to search nearby areas and hospitals, but nothing was found.

“The hospital alerted its Chief Security Officer (CSO), who contacted security agencies. The police later discovered her body around Bolingo Hotel Junction and took it to the mortuary. Her family buried her in Imo State.

“The incident was reported to the Federal Ministry of Health, the Department of State Services and the police, who have assured the hospital that investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible.”

Ahmed added that measures were being taken to support staff and reduce risks, including reviewing shift schedules, improving the hospital shuttle bus system and enhancing staff safety arrangements.

He prayed for the repose of Chuwumeziem’s soul and for strength for her family and colleagues to bear the painful loss.

Also speaking, Head of Nursing Services at the FMC, Mrs Abigail Gwimi, described Chuwumeziem as gentle, dutiful and deeply committed to patients’ care.

It was gathered that, as a spinster, Chuwumeziem lived with her aunt in Wuse, Abuja, and hailed from Orlu, Imo State.

 

Lawyers vow to fight for slain colleague, nurse

The Federation of International Women Lawyers (FIDA) and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Abuja have vowed to ensure that justice is served for a lawyer and a nurse who were murdered this January in Abuja by criminal transport operators. 

Abuja Metro had reported that a nurse attached to the Federal Medical Centre (FNC), Jabi, Abuja, Chinemerem Chukwumeziem, was killed on January 3, while shortly, a lawyer, who was a former treasurer of NBA, Abuja branch, Princess Mediatrix Ochigbo, was killed and her corpse dumped along the Kubwa Expressway.

In a FIDA statement on the matter, which was conveyed by the Chairperson of the Abuja branch, Chioma Onyenucheya-Uko, on Thursday, the association vowed to exercise their constitutional obligation to sustain the engagement, advocacy and demand for accountability to end the “scourge of one-chance” and related crimes in the country.

Chioma said, “When officers of the court, defenders of rights are abducted and murdered on the streets of the nation’s capital, it sends a chilling message to every resident, especially women and other vulnerable commuters, who already navigate public spaces under constant threat.”

The federation called for urgent, decisive, coordinated and visible actions, noting that the latest “one-chance” incidents were not isolated incidents but part of a disturbing pattern that had continued unabated despite public outcry.

Therefore, it called on the FCT Administration (FCTA) to immediately declare a security emergency against one-chance operators within the FCT, establish and publicly unveil a multi-agency task force dedicated solely to dismantling these criminal networks, prioritise the installation and activation of functional CCTV, surveillance, particularly along major transport corridors, drop-off points and identified hotspots, urgently regulate and sanitise commercial transportation, including clear identification, registration and monitoring of public and informal transport operators.

 For the security agencies such as the police, DSS, NSCDC and others, FIDA called for improvement of intelligence-driven patrols, stop-and-search operations and covert surveillance along known “one-chance” routes, prompt arrest, thorough investigation and prosecution of perpetrators and their collaborators, provision of regular public briefings on actions taken and arrests made, and prosecutions commenced in order to rebuild public confidence.

 For the justice sector, the federation demanded serious and speedy disposition of cases arising from such crimes “so that justice is not only done, but seen to be done.”

 Similarly, in a statement signed by the NBA-Abuja Chairman, Steve Emelieze , and Secretary, Onyeka Obiajulu, dated January 8, 2026, the association strongly called on the Commissioner of Police (CP), FCT, and relevant security agencies to urgently intensify intelligence-driven investigations, dismantle “one-chance” syndicates, increase visible and strategic police presence along identified

hotspots and ensure the prompt arrest and prosecution of all those responsible for the death of Chigbo and other similar crimes.

He said, “Justice must not only be done, but must be seen to be done.’’
