The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone A, yesterday, said it intercepted 16 trucks of foreign rice smuggled into the country from neighbouring Benin Republic in the month of May, 2022.

Similarly, it said it impounded 42,000 litres of petroleum products suspected to be petrol from a criminal gang who were on the verge of smuggling the product to Benin Republic.

The acting Controller of FOU, Kehinde Ejibunu, who made this revelation at a press briefing yesterday, said aside the 16 trucks of rice that were seized, 599 cartons of frozen poultry products were also intercepted.

He said the Duty Paid Value (DPV) of the seized items was N818.1 million.

According to him, the unit intercepted 41,950 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), 9,917 bags of smuggled foreign parboiled rice; 116.3 kilogrammes of Indian hemp; 29 units of motorcycles; 54 cartons of creams, 3,260 pairs of used shoes, among several other items.

He also disclosed that the unit generated N64.3 million from Demand Notices (DN) on cargoes that exited the ports without paying accurate duties to the federal government.
