It was gathered that Ada was said to have informed his father that the one-week strike had ended the previous week and that lectures are ongoing. A source said when Ada returned to the house in the evening, Mr. Igwoche felt embarrassed with his disobedient attitude and again engaged him in a second round of argument. That led to Igwoche pulling out a cutlass on Ada, but it was intercepted by family members.
One of Igwoche’s daughters, Patience, 17, told Weekly Trust that after the quarrel, their father went into the room and came out with a gun to frighten Ada. “We started dragging the gun with him before a bullet accidentally was fired, hitting Joy on the head.” The 22-year-old later died in the hospital.
According to Patience, soon after, their father started crying. She added that it was their father who used his telephone to call the police to tell them he has killed his own daughter. The police arrested and detained him at the ‘C’ Division Police Station in North Bank, Makurdi. Efforts to speak to Ada proved abortive, as he could not be seen in the family residence.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Benue State Police Command, ASP Alaribe Ejike confirmed the incident and said the suspect is under detention. The PPRO said soon after investigation, he will be charged to court and warned parents to be conscious when handling family matters. Joy, who got admission to read Law at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, has since been buried.
