The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD), Mrs. Ibukun Odusote, who made the observation at a four-day regional workshop organised by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) said fisheries has also contributed immensely to the Nigerian economy.
The workshop which focused on the use of Ecosystem Approach for Fisheries Management (EAF-Nansen Project) also provided platform for stakeholders in the fisheries agro sub sector to brainstorm and appraise shrimp fisheries management plans of Nigeria, Cameroon and Gabon.
Odusote hinted that the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries, and the FAO have developed the use of the Ecosystem Approach to fisheries management (EAF -Nansen project) as a way of addressing the need for a practical implementation of the principles of sustainable development in the sector.
According to her, the objective of the workshop was to ascertain the existence, size and practicality of the shrimp fisheries implementation plans of each participating country.
Speaking at the workshop, EAF-Nansen project Co-coordinator Dr. Kwame Koranteng, who came from Rome, Italy, stated that the project was supported by the Norwegian Agency for Development Co-operation with the aim of assisting African countries.
