The Dorothy Njemanze Foundation (DNF) shelter for survivors of gender-based violence has been saved from closure following financial intervention from Fairmont Petroleum Limited.

The shelter, which provides a safe space for women and children escaping abuse, was at risk of shutting down due to financial constraints, potentially leaving many without refuge.

The intervention was announced in Abuja at the premiere of Voices Within, a docudrama hosted by the Daurama Foundation as part of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

At the event, Dorothy Njemanze, founder of DNF, spoke about the shelter’s financial struggles and the urgent need for support.

Njemanze said: “For many survivors, the shelter is their only safe space, and the risk of closure was overwhelming. This support ensures that women and children in crisis will continue to have a place where they can find safety and begin to rebuild their lives.”

In response, Dr Gazzali Salisu Buhari, Chairman of Fairmont Petroleum Limited, pledged to cover the shelter’s operational costs as part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility efforts.

Dr Buhari stated: “Listening to Dorothy’s appeal made it clear that immediate action was necessary. Businesses have a responsibility to contribute meaningfully, and keeping the shelter open will prevent survivors from facing the added trauma of homelessness.”

The financial support will allow the shelter to continue providing emergency housing, legal assistance, and rehabilitation services.

The Daurama Foundation, led by Dr Samira Buhari, acknowledged the partnership and highlighted the role of private sector involvement in addressing gender-based violence.

“This collaboration reflects the impact of collective action. With sustained efforts, long-term support systems for survivors can be strengthened,” she added.

The event also emphasised the need for justice and accountability in addressing gender-based violence.

Voices Within, the docudrama screened during the programme, depicted the experiences of survivors and reinforced calls for stronger action against perpetrators.

Other speakers noted that with this support, the Dorothy Njemanze Foundation can continue its work in providing shelter and assistance to survivors, addressing immediate needs while contributing to broader efforts to combat gender-based violence.
