However, to capitalise on this, some scholarship schemes come up every now and then that are fraudulent. One of such came up with a youth commission’s name. After the candidates applied, they were asked to pay some money.  Many refused, seeing it for what it was: a scam to defraud unsuspecting students.
Then out of the blue, like a bolt of lightning came a scholarship scheme supposedly sponsored by the UK government to study abroad, which is too good to be true. It offered more than 70 percent.
There are some things about this scholarship that should raise questions. For example, firstly, the offer for undergraduates was open to everyone as long as you have finished secondary school.
Unlike other scholarship schemes that state their requirements such as five credits or five distinctions, this one had none, meaning that even if you have one credit you can apply and try your luck.
Would the UK not go for the best to sponsor, how could it spend tax payers’ money without scrutiny?  This is doubtful in a country where people are conscious of how government spend money because of the tax regime  that make people to pay tax, unlike here where people hardly pay tax, including companies and other businesses.
In any case, in scholarship schemes that have criteria, even with sending the requirement it is not all those that applied that are invited. Then at the venue of the exams, their credentials are screened to make sure everything is as it should be.
But for this one, apparently all those that applied were invited. Some came from different states only to be informed that the question paper had finished! And they were asked to return the following week for the exams.
This shows that they have not made adequate provision of questions papers for the people they invited. If they invited five thousand people one would have thought they would have a question paper for every one of them.
The venue was rowdy because it was for everybody, so to speak, even secondary school students attended, probably those in their final year.
There was no security at the place as candidates sat very close and communicated, in fact some came out of the hall with the question paper, to discuss and go back inside. What could be more scandalous than this open exam malpractice?
In such scholarship exams that I know, the exams is done on a fixed date on hourly basis. The candidates are informed on which hour they would do their own.
So which serious scholarship would not have enough question paper and ask candidates to come back the following week? How could they be sure they would get the question paper when they go back?
Those candidates that have attended highly competitive and organised scholarship exams were shocked at this one, which was like a market place.
Which schools are being offered by this scholarship scheme, one may ask. Well it offers ten institutions; two universities in the UK, two other institutions, two universities in Cyprus and four universities in Russia.
But why would UK offer scholarship to foreigners and not take them to its universities, why only two, why push them to Russia?
Some countries that offer scholarship select the best and take them to their own countries to study.
Besides, how could the ten institutions accommodate the candidates that pass the examinations?
According to the scholarship, they were going to get admission for the candidates from two institutions, then the candidate can use one.
 It is unfortunate that as government continues to pay lip service to improving education, Nigerians are falling victims to all manner of scholarship schemes, offering them false opportunities abroad.
