Hajiya Laure Mai Kunu, the mother of Kano Central Senatorial candidate of the APC, Abdussalam Abdulkarim (AA) Zaura, has been abducted by gunmen in Kano.
The mother of the politician, who is said to be between the ages of 65 and 70, was abducted at her residence in Rangaza ward of Zaura village in Ungogo LGA the early hours of Monday.
When our reporter visited the family house in Zaura town, which is about 10km from Kano city, he found people, including relatives, in a state of mourning.
One of the relatives, Zahraddeen Usman, who was in the house when the gunmen struck, narrated how the incident happened.
He said, “They were three. One of them covered his face and it seems he knew every part of the house. Our house has different parts and two gates. But he knew the gate we normally use to enter the house and also the part where she (the abductee) is living.
“I was sleeping in a room next to her room; I heard a knock on the door. I asked who was there, and one of them jumped in. He pointed a gun at me and asked me to take him to where money was kept. I told them we don’t keep money in the house.
“They then moved straight to her room and brought her out. They also saw his father, but they didn’t touch him. They whisked her away, that was when they fired their gun once and left.”
He added that they left with his phone and later contacted them twice through two different lines and assured them she was alive and healthy.
He further said, “They called him (AA Zaura) and allowed him to speak with her, but they didn’t demand anything from him. They told him they are in Katsina and will get back to him later in the day. I heard that they also called with another line, but yet they didn’t request anything.”
On why there was no security personnel guarding the house especially since there is no active police presence in the village, he said “He (AA Zaura) wanted to bring in security personnel to look after the house and the people living in, but they (parents) said no, they don’t want.”
When contacted, the spokesman of the Kano State Police Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said two suspects had been arrested while efforts were on to rescue the victim.
