How man attempted to smuggle Indian hemp into Kuje prison
The FCT Command of the Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS) has arrested one Clement Jacob for allegedly smuggling substances suspected to be Indian hemp into the Kuje Medium Security Prison in Abuja.
The spokesman of the command, Chukwuedo Humphrey, in a statement, said the suspect, of Deidei Village in Abuja, had the substances hidden in a sandal and was expected to delivered them to one Emeka Onyejikacki, an inmate of the prison, who was in custody for a case of possession of hard drugs.
Humphrey said the suspect ran out of luck when he was observed to have exchanged his sandals with that of the inmate after his session of prison visit.
He said, “Inspector Hussain Ibrahim, the officer in charge of the visit area, noticed the quick exchange of footwear and requested for another search after the visiting session was over.
“During the search, inspector Hussain carefully tore open the soles of the sandals thereby exposing the illegal transaction.
“Upon interrogation, Jacob, pleading ignorance, divulged that one Mrs. Emeka had called him to assist her in paying Mr. Emeka a visit and that he was also instructed to exchange his footwear with the inmate before leaving the premises.”
Humphrey said the FTC Controller of Prisons, Mustapha Iliyasu Atta, commended the alertness of the officer and further reminded members of the public and family members of inmates of their responsibility in ensuring that the inmates were properly reformed and rehabilitated.
