A commercial motorcycle operator, known as an “okada” rider, in Lagos has recounted how his bike was stolen by a man dressed in a military uniform.

The victim, who identified himself only as Henry, disclosed that the suspect disappeared with his motorcycle after using a fake ATM card at a POS operator in an attempt to withdraw cash.

“The suspect had engaged me the penultimate Saturday afternoon to take him to several locations and then return him to Command Road, Ayobo, for a fare of ₦8,000,” Henry said.

“While we were returning to Ayobo around 10 pm at Iyana Iba New Road, the suspect instructed me to withdraw money for him from a POS operator, handing over a fake ATM card. While I was with the POS attendant, the suspect sped off with the motorcycle,” the victim alleged.

Our correspondent learned from other okada riders that suspects dressed in army uniforms have been linked to a series of motorcycle-snatching incidents across various parts of the city.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed Henry’s case.

He said, “Last Monday, Henry spotted the suspect with the stolen bike at First Gate, Igbo–Elerin, along LASU–Iyana Iba Road. Fortunately, an RRS patrol team was nearby.

‘’On sighting Henry and the officers, the suspect, still in military uniform, abandoned the bike and fled the scene.

“The motorcycle has since been returned to Henry, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the suspect and ensure he faces the full consequences of his actions,” Hundeyin added.
