The Kebbi State Government has officially announced Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi Mikailu Sami, Gomo III as the new Emir of Zuru.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in Kebbi State, Alhaji Abubakar Garba Dutsin-Mari, who presented the appointment letter signed by Governor Nasir Idris, said the appointment was in line with the Zuru Emirate law that was signed into law on March 13, 2000.
How the new emir emerged
First, to contest the emirship of Zuru, each candidate must be a rightful heir to the throne, a person of sound mind and wisdom and without any record of major crime or imprisonment. The kingmakers of the Zuru Emirate are nine in number. Five of them are from the Senior Council members of the Zuru Emirate, which consists of the Galadiman Zuru from Fakai, Magajin Garin Zuru from Danko, Turakin Zuru from Dabai, Tukuran Zuru from Wasagu and Shatiman Zuru from Sakaba.
Others are the Chief of Wasagu, Chief of Danko, Chief of Fakai and Chief of Sakaba because every chiefdom of the Zuru Emirate must be duly represented in the selection of a new emir for Zuru.
The kingmakers select the three candidates contesting for the position and forward the same to the governor in accordance with the Zuru Emirate law.
When Emir Muhammadu Sani Sami passed on as the Chief of Wasagu chiefdom, Alhaji Muktari Musa was assigned to serve as acting emir pending the emergence of a new emir.
The Commissioner of Information, Yakubu Ahmed BK, said the appointment of Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi Mika’ilu Sami as the new Emir of Zuru had sent a wave of excitement and relief throughout the emirate.
“Given the complex history of selection of emirs in northern Nigeria, where intrigues and external influence often play a significant role, many had expected the process in Zuru to be contentious. However, Governor Nasir Idris’s commitment to transparency and fairness has yielded a different outcome, one that absolutely relies and reflects the will of the people,” he said.
Profile of the new emir
The new Emir of Zuru, Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi Mika’ilu Sami, is from the lineage of the late Emir Muhammadu Sani Sami, Gomo II. His late father was the elder brother of the immediate past emir.
Before ascending the throne of his forefathers, he was trained as a nurse. He worked at the General Hospital, Zuru and Yauri. He retired as the head of college clinic at the College of Agriculture, Zuru, now Federal University of Agriculture. He later joined the business world with a particular interest in mining. He served as chairman of Tencent Technology Ltd, chairman of Sino Gold Fortunes Nigeria Ltd, and is a founder of Green Circle Nigeria Ltd.
