How reliable is this car? We met Terry Akpan, who has a Jetta made in 1984. Terry told us his Jetta has been very dependable at all times. In fact, he described the Jetta as “becoming a partner for everyday life”.

“For instance,” he explained, “the car gives so much that I am way behind on commitments to my car. There was a time I used the car for more than 10 months without servicing. It’s a hustler kit”

Akpan looked at his car and said, “Here is the thing, I just made some transformation to my car, like adding a new air conditioning unit from Toyota Camry, Golf and a compressor from Peugeot and the car has its limits as a tool and I am not willing to part with it.”

John Peter Ette, who has been using Volkswagen Vento since 1995 said his car is still useful. He said the day to day running of the car is “economical.”

According him, “I added bigger tyres and rims with an air conditioning unit and an alarm system with remote control.”

He used a compressor from Peugeot and a pulley from Golf with Camry air exchanger.

He said, “it wasn’t easy to figure it out but we want the best air conditioning equally to a new car without any strain on the power output.”

The motorists said because Vw Jetta comes with low ride the wheel bearing doesn’t last up to six months.

“I actually bought a new wheel bearing and in a two-hour journey my bearings broke and I escaped fatal accident by the skin of my teeth.  So it is advisable to go for tokunbo,” he stated.

So how do these parts get to Nigeria?
