The ICT centre is equipped to receive real-time numerical and satellite data for processing, archiving and dissemination to various international organizations while the scientific and technical information library is a collection of world relevant documents dealing with various aspects of meteorology.The ICT Centre serves as a hub for its wide area network (WAN) and will eventually be linked to the World Meteorological Organization(WMO) Global Telecommunication System (GTS). The commissioning of these projects is part of the agency’s commitment to improving the timeliness of delivering weather forecast to its customers.
In his welcome address, the Director General ofNiMET Dr. Anthony Anuforom said the establishment of the ICT and scientific library was in response to the need for the agency to automate and integrate the huge volume of weather data it generates, and in conformity with the WorldMeteorological Organization (WMO) standards.
The minister after undertaking a guided facility tour of the agency’s Central Forecast Office, Weather Studio, Instrument Calibration Laboratory and other facilities in the complex expressed satisfaction, saying the facilities were evidence that NiMET has transformed into a world class technology-driven organization.Chidoka said the facilities put in place in these projects will support the agencies initiatives in carrying out its mandate of monitoring weather and providing early warning information to other sectors outside aviation.“It is my expectation thatNiMET will deploy the resources at their ICT Centre, as well as other facilities we have seen today in achieving this objective, particularly indriving the commercialization initiatives, which I am aware the agency has already started” the minister advised.
