The fellows have unfortunately chosen the media as avenue to vent their diatribe against the governor and the party stalwarts. On the first impulse, the rational thing to do would have been to ignore these individuals, but the danger in doing so is that the public would tend to believe this falsehood if there are repeatedly echoed as it is being done in the media. The more reason why it is pertinent to alert the public who these dissidents.
There is a universal saying that you can fool some of the people some of the time and get away with it. You can also fool some people all the time but you cannot fool all the people all the time. In a democratic dispensation especially in a developing society like ours, it is not unusual to read on the pages of newspapers or over hear news items on radio and television that the president has done this and the governor has done that. That is democracy in action. In Sokoto, the PDP has never had it so smooth like it did in 2007 when the popularity of Governor Wamakko gave the party which has been in the opposition for eight years a deserved victory.
For the purpose of putting the records straight, Wamakko was the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) governorship candidate and because of the kind support he enjoys from the people of the state, the PDP saw him as the only alternative to wrest power from his former boss, Alhaji Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa. The slogan “Sai Alu” was not only a local anthem within the core Caliphate states but in Niger Republic, Benin, Togo, Cameroun and other West African countries, it was the vogue. In fact, even before the PDP started making advances to this “beautiful bride”, most of the party’s card carrying members and supporters had made up their minds to vote for him and so when the Obasanjo-led administration sealed the deal with the then ANPP candidate, it was a big relief for the PDP in the state and as expected, Wamakko delivered Sokoto to the PDP.
In the last four years, he must have acted in good faith for the state but those who have been expecting the contrary are bound to be unhappy with his giant stride in the transformation of the state, hence device means to smear his reputation at all cost. As earlier mentioned, the so-called aggrieved party members most of whom are defeated state and National Assembly members believed party politics is a mere joke forgetting that the PDP is a solid structure which has no place for mediocrity.
The first and most ridiculous reason why adduced for their position is the governor’s alleged role in the emergence of Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal as the Speaker of the House of Representatives. According to them, the governor single handedly ensure the emergence of Tambuwal against the wishes of the President, his vice and the national leadership of the party. How ridiculous. The governor could not be more powerful than the President and vice president as well as the party that brought him to power. By that singular miscalculation, those who forwarded that complaint have proved to be mere clowns. For the avoidance of doubt, Speaker Aminu Waziri Tambuwal was over overwhelmingly voted into office by his colleagues at the House of Representatives and no amount of pressure or economic support from Wamakko could produce such result.
In addition, they also alleged that Wamakko did not support Jonathan during the last PDP presidential primaries but Atiku Abubakar. They are so ignorant that they could not distinguish between intra- party and inter party affairs. The presidential primaries was a PDP affair and just as they want Wamakko to be denied PDP ticket other PDP members have the same right to advocate for his return. It appears the petitioners are not well educated on political issues and there is need for the PDP to regard them as “mere entertainers”.
Then they alleged that Wamakko has been using the doctrine of favoritism and partiality. Well, in human relations, only God can be just but no leader in the world can satisfy all the demands of his subjects, especially in politics. Between 1999 and now the country has had three different political leaders and all of them have opponents for one reason or the other. It is part of democracy in action. It should be on record that among those who signed the watery petition which lacks substance are defeated National Assembly and state Assembly members whose performance in office between 2007 and 2010 was so bad that their own people refused to elect them for a second term. The PDP in Sokoto is solidly behind Wamakko and the entire people of the state are also behind him.
