At the welfare/emergency department at the Corps headquarters at Okemosan, Baby Abolurin was wrapped in a white/sky blue coloured shawl, looking beautiful, but, a closer look indicated that, “he suffered a fracture on his left leg. May be when the mother was trying to have him pulled out by force,” Shakirat Adeyinka, head of the unit, told our correspondent.

Narrating how the officers of the command rescued Baby Abolurin, the State Commander, Waheed Bamidele Popoola, said that he was rescued with his umbilical cord still intact on Tuesday night. The baby, a male, was dumped the drainage/refuse dump site along the Kuto/Isabo road, few meters away from the popular Kuto motor park and had been beaten by the evening downpour before he was spotted by officials of the NSCDC.

According to Popoola, “two officers of the Corps, on their way home at night on Tuesday,  heard the cry of the baby at the spot and immediately alerted the headquarters and the Emergency/Relief department swung into action by moving to the spot to retrieve the baby.”

He said that the baby which has been named after the Commandant General of the NSCDC, Dr. Ade Abolurin, was immediately given first aid treatment. At about 11.30pm, the team led by Adeyinka and Kareem with the approval of Popoola, visited the state Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare for a formal handover.

At the office, a director received the team, including our correspondent and took them to the Permanent Secretary, Ishola Adegbola Ambali. Later, another deputy director, Michael Olatunde was assigned to lead the team to the Stella Obasanjo Children’s Home where necessary action on the handover was made.

A senior official at the Home assured that medical attention would be given as soon as possible, even as she drew the attention of the fracture on the leg to the team. Kareem explained that the step taken by the Corps was in line with the Act setting up the organisation.

He explained further that the “Baby Abolurin” was named after the Commandant General because, this will be the first time we are recording such, and since the CG is a humane person and moreover from Ogun State, there is nothing bad giving him the name.”  He counseled residents to always be at alert against such acts, noting that, “the culprit could have been arrested if the public had been observant enough.”
