Residents of Share in the Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State narrowly escaped a major tragedy, thanks to the swift and coordinated response of security forces.

Suspected bandits launched a calculated attack on the community on Sunday evening, but the combined efforts of the Nigerian Army, forest guards, and local hunters forced them to retreat without causing harm. Eyewitnesses said gunfire erupted around 7:50 pm, just as residents were heading for Isha’i prayers. The attackers, reportedly emerging from surrounding bushes, appeared to have chosen the timing deliberately when vigilance was at its lowest.

The Chairman of the Local Government, Hadji Femi Yusuf, noted that while this was not the first time such an incursion had occurred in Share, “the security forces and forest guards demonstrated the resolve to keep the community peaceful.”

Abdulazeez Ahmed, the Youth Leader of Share, spoke with Daily Trust on Tuesday and praised the prompt intervention of security personnel. “We cannot quantify the potential casualties if they had succeeded in penetrating the first building they encountered,” he said.

He noted that the attackers had very little time to execute their plan due to the quick response of the security forces. “They came at 7:50 pm, rather than during the usual night vigilance. The encounter took place very close to the Local Government Secretariat, which shows how daring they were. Clearly, their approach was calculated, but the security team did not allow them to gain any ground,” Ahmed explained.

Ahmed also suggested that pressure from security operations in other parts of Kwara North may have forced the assailants to shift their focus to Share. He commended the role of the forest guards, emphasizing that with local security and patrols on standby, the community could withstand such attacks.
