A joint security operation comprising the State Security Service and the Nigerian Army has reportedly neutralised no fewer than 50 bandits during a fierce gun duel in Niger State.
The bandits were said to have engaged the security operatives in Kumbashi, Mariga Local Government Area on Wednesday but came under superior firepower. Some kidnap victims were recovered during the operation.
The Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkin-Daji, representing Mariga Local Government Area, made this known during a visit to Kontagora on Wednesday.
While commending the security operatives for their doggedness, the Sarkin Daji revealed that eyewitnesses said about 300 bandits armed with sophisticated weapons attempted to invade the village at 3pm on Tuesday.
He said, “The attack was targeted at a State Security Service asset camp in the area. However, security operatives swiftly repelled the assault after a fierce gun duel that left no fewer than 50 of the assailants dead. Many others reportedly fled with gunshot wounds.
“My constituents confirmed that the bandits, clearly shaken by the scale of their losses, were seen dismembering the corpses of their dead colleagues, loading them in sacks and hauling them off on motorcycles.”
In a related development, one farmer identified as Nura, has been reportedly killed by bandits on Thursday in Kundu, near Zungeru in Rafi Local Government Area.
A resident of Zungeru, Usman Abdullahi, told Weekend Trust that four other farmers were also injured during the attack.
