Team Nigeria Para-Athletics has once again showcased its strength on the global stage, securing an impressive haul of 19 medals at the 19th Edition of the World Para Athletics Grand Prix held in Tunis, Tunisia.

The team’s outstanding performance earned them a second-place overall finish among 61 competing nations.

This remarkable achievement highlights Nigeria’s continued dominance in track and field events across various physically challenged classifications.

According to the statement issued by Mrs Kehinde Ajayi, Director of Information and PR at the National Sports Commission (NSC), the team’s achievement reflects the athletes’ unwavering dedication, as well as the strategic support and foundational backing provided by officials.

“Nigerian athletes delivered impressive performances, with several claiming multiple podium finishes. Notable athletes include Flora Ugwunwa, Sefiu Ojeley, Alam Ugochi, and Uwak Unyime, who contributed significantly to the team’s medal tally.

“The 19 medals won by Team Nigeria include 10 gold, 6 silver, and 3 bronze,” the statement reads.

The team’s performance reaffirms Nigeria’s status as a powerhouse in para-athletics and sets the stage for even greater accomplishments in upcoming international competitions.

“The President of the Para-Athletics Federation, Rafiu Olawale Etti, played a crucial role in ensuring Nigeria’s successful outing,” the statement added.

Speaking on the outstanding performance, Para-Olympics Committee of Nigeria (PCN) President, Sunday Odebode said this result is a reflection of the athletes’ dedication and the Commission’s deliberate investment in para-sports.

He added that Nigeria’s performance in Tunisia has earned the country qualification for the World Championship in India later this year and secured several spots for the Commonwealth Games and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

“The Commission has also made our various programs very easy to execute because of the attention and funding we are currently getting from them,” he added.

“The Para-lifters just concluded their trials where we discovered 10 new athletes. These athletes will now represent Nigeria at the World Tournament in Santiago, Chile.”

Furthermore, he noted that para-athletes and para-swimmers are scheduled to begin camping this month in preparation for international engagements, while wheelchair basketball teams are ramping up preparations for the Commonwealth Games.
