How the government can tackle kidnapping

Kidnapping is a criminal offence that involves the unlawful taking and carrying away of a person by force or fraud or the unlawful seizure and detention of a person against his will. The principal motive for kidnapping is to subject the victim to some form of involuntary servitude, to expose him to the commission of some further criminal act against his person, or to obtain ransom for his release.

Kidnapping has become rampant in our modern world today which has made many Nigerians to become apprehensive while travelling. This crime has become prevalent in Nigeria and Nigerians need to be extra careful about the place they travel to.

Kidnapping has become a great national threat in Nigeria, where kidnappers can snatch anybody at any time and demand a ransom for the person’s freedom.

This is one of the major problems in Nigeria now which needs proper solution.

Researchers have found poverty, joblessness, terrorism, fraud and the inability of the government to punish offenders adequately as the reasons this crime has continued to persist.

This has led to the setting up of security outfits by some governments and communities to assist the regular government security agencies in addressing the menace.

Between July 2021 and June 2022, more than 3,400 people were abducted across the country, and 564 others were killed in kidnapping-related violence.

The federal government has to do something about this urgently. It should use all resources at its disposal to tackle this criminality.

The kidnappers need to be put in their place. In order to make the country a peaceful one high security must be ensured.

The government should consider other measures that would discourage vulnerable youths from engaging in this criminal act.

There should be provision of employment for the youth in the country, toward addressing the menace.
