The Director General of the Michael Imodu Institute for Labour Studies (MINILS), Ilorin, Isa Aremu, has said the strategic diplomacy deployed by President Bola Tinubu in managing tensions with his United States counterpart, Donald Trump, over allegations of genocide in parts of Nigeria, prevented the invasion of Nigeria.

Aremu spoke on Wednesday during his opening address at the institute’s 5th Ramadan lecture series titled “The Role of Muslims in Supporting the Bereaved,” organised by its Muslim community.

According to him, rather than engage in public exchanges or trade insults, President Tinubu adopted a quiet but firm diplomatic approach to douse tensions.

“President Tinubu kept calm and worked behind the scenes to dissuade him,” Aremu said.

According to him, “President Tinubu used diplomacy to stop Trump from attacking Nigeria over an imaginary and non-existent genocide.”

He argued that a confrontational response could have escalated tensions with grave consequences.

“If President Tinubu had not deployed diplomacy in that case, perhaps we would have been going after one another. We might by now be killing ourselves,” he stated.

The labour leader urged Nigerians not to lose hope despite the security challenges confronting parts of the country.

He stressed the importance of dialogue and peaceful engagement in resolving conflicts, both locally and internationally.
