A former Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Chief Samu’ila Danko Makama, has opined that lasting peace would only be achieved in Plateau State when governments at all levels discharge their responsibilities.
Makama, who spoke to Daily Trust on phone, also said that if people refrained from reprisal attacks and stop making inflammatory remarks peace would be achieved in the state.
He added that to maintain peace, the federal government should ensure that security agencies deployed to the state are sent to every nook and cranny to protect residents and forestall reprisals.
“I am happy that the federal government has already started taking steps by deploying Special Forces to the state. I want the Special Forces to do their jobs diligently and with commitment so that the state would enjoy relative peace.”
Chief Makama urged politicians to stop politicizing the attacks in order to score cheap political points, while advising people to stop making inciting comments on social media.
“I want people to say things that would contribute to achieving peace not to aggravate the situation; I want all the parties to follow the peace road map established by Governor Lalong. If people adhere to that peace template there would be long lasting peace in the state.”
Makama, who charged the state government to intensify efforts to make sure all the parties come to an agreement with the peace template, stressed that peace can also reign in the state if perpetrators of the attacks are punished, if security agencies are able to seize weapons from the communities, and checkmate avenues through which weapons are acquired.
