Teachers can motivate students to participate in math activities and overcome mathematics phobia by teaching them self-calming strategies, President, Sustaining Continuity in Education Foundation, Lady Rose Onyeukwu-Ashinze.
She made the statement at a seminar on ‘restoration from emotional crises’ in Abuja. She said math fear could result from emotional instability which could be prevailed over by using math in everyday application. She said teachers should strive to get students calm down during math lessons.
“We move from school to school to mentor children and let them know that they don’t need to be scared of anything. Reading, exam and math are in everyday life and so, students must learn to calm down and not to fear, because fear comes with stress. Math is not hard; is as easy as other subjects.”
She said a number of people suffering from emotional instability are actually unaware and do not know the solutions.
Topics discussed at the seminar included emotional crisis, loneliness and how to detect emotional instability.
