The Provost of the College of Education, Zuba, Abuja, Dr Muhammad Gambo Hamza, has said that corruption in the education system can be tackled through accountability and transparency.
Hamza stated this at the opening ceremony of the zonal conference of the Association of Women in Colleges of Education (WICE), yesterday, in Zuba.
The theme of the conference was: “The role of education in curbing corruption and youth unemployment in the 21st Century.”
He decried the existence of corrupt practices in schools, saying: “Parents are known to have used illegal means to influence their children’s admission into a particular institution. “Within the tertiary education system, some students resort to ‘sorting’ (finding ways of purchasing high and unmerited mark from lecturers in order to enhance their grade in their final examination).”
He said corruption can be reduced when people embraced the principles of transparency, integrity and accountability in public and private transaction.
