What exactly is value?

Your value is defined in two things. That is your importance and your usefulness. These two things define your quality or worth before others. This is talking about your relevance in the lives of others and how important you are before them.

Do you know, that, what differentiates people from one another is value? The light of the candle is different from one emitted by the light bulb. The illumination from a fluorescent bulb is different from that of a floodlight. And yet the illumination from all this cannot be compared with that of the sun. The brightness of the sun accounts for its glory as one that rules the day.

At the rising of the sun nature goes agog; flowers of the field pop open, reveal their beauty and also let loose their fragrance to the environment. The birds excited begin to bellow their songs of melodies, and the rabbits sneak out of their holes, leaping and dancing around celebrating at the increasing brightness of the sun.

The entire creation awakes in the warmth and mentality of a new day dawning, and hopes begin to increase at the instance of new possibilities and chances in a new day.

All this define the value of the sun. It is not only man that makes hay while the sun shines, the plant kingdom and entire nature too get inspired and empowered for life. Without the sun, plants become useless, unproductive and die, and human life too becomes endangered for want of oxygen that must come from plants for a balanced life. What a great value that the sun is responsible for this balancing of life. It is no wonder that the scripture has described the sun in Psalm 19:5-6 as

“a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, that rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race.” And that “His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.”

Value attracts

Your value determines what you attract. Precious stones provide a good illustration of value. Diamond or gold are not easily found, but those who find them are happy for their great value.

Valuable objects are appreciated and gracefully adored

Ordinary stones have little or no value and so people trample on them and kick them around. People do not treat precious stones like this, they adore and keep them jealously as something of great value.

Valuable objects are carefully protected

Valuable things enjoy protection. The things we value greatly are the things we remember most often and we very carefully ensure they are secure from every possible loss.

If you are a valuable employee or one that is cherished by your employers they will treat you differently. And if you attempt to leave they will do everything possible to retain you, even if it means doubling or tripling your salary.

When Joseph was in Portiphar’s house, he was greatly cherished for his great value, and he was put in charge of all things except his boss and his wife. His value became more visible and celebrated in Egypt when Pharaoh put him in absolute control of affairs in the land. Are you this valuable?

How can you know your value?

Here is a checklist you can use. 1. Whenever you are not around people miss you or not? 2. Your level of importance or usefulness to others. 3. Your level of impact or influence on others. 4. Your availability, dependability and level of commitment. 5. Are you helping people to relieve their burdens? 6. Are your words and actions bringing smile and hope to the hopeless? 7. Are people usually excited and happy to meet and relate with you? 8. Are you a helper or a hindrance to others? 9. Are you a loving person or a loner and selfish individual?

How much do you weigh as a person? Improve yourself. When you do, you will increase your value.
